As we approach the October break it is a great time to reflect and look back on the great start our Marr College teams have made in the Conference and Scottish Cup this Season.
Conference Update
We are currently sitting 2nd in the Whole School Conference having played 20 matches and won 18. We have a fixture in hand with St Aloysius which will be played after the October holidays.
1st XV
The Seniors made a really strong start in the Conference with a great away win against The Glasgow Academy in the opening round. They backed this up with a hard fought home win over High School of Glasgow the following week.
The boys hit a bit of a stumbling block when they travelled to Balgray to take on Kelvinside in round 3, our opponents were much more up for it on the day and won the physical on field position battle coming away with a 34-10 win and inflicting the boys first defeat of the season.
The September holiday weekend meant the boys had to wait a couple of weeks to get back on the field to right the wrongs of the Kelvinside game. They certainly managed that when they hosted Hutcheson's Grammar at the Playing Fields on Saturday morning, they served up the best performance of the season so far to run out 49-17 winners and go into the break with plenty of momentum ahead of the St Aloysius fixture on the 26th October.
U16
The U16 squad have been in red hot form so far this season, they kicked off the Conference with a comprehensive 50-0 win over Glasgow Academy in round 1 and back that up with an impressive 39-12 away win over High School of Glasgow.
Kelvinside couldn't field a team in round 3 so the boys got a well deserved rest before putting in a an excellent performance away to Hutchesons' Grammar to win 64-12.
U15
It was a great start for our U15 lads who went to The Glasgow Academy in round 1 and came away with a 64-14 victory. Things got a lot tougher in round 2 when they welcomed High School of Glasgow to Troon and went down 67-7.
Plenty of work must have been put in by the coaches and players as the boys came out and defeated Kelvinside, St Columba's & Hutchesons by big scorelines in their next 3 matches.
S1 & S2
Although the S1 & S2 age groups don't play for competitive points in the Conference (each team is awarded 2 points for fulfilling their fixture) our teams have made a great start to the season.
Both age groups have gone 4 from 4 in their Conference fixtures so far and are playing some great rugby. Their coaches are working hard to continue and develop the boys skills and implement an expansive game plan.
One of the most pleasing things to see at S1 & S2 is the sheer number of players they have involved, both teams are regularly fielding A & B squads which is fantastic.
Scottish Cup
The 1st XV had a relatively easy route into Round 3 as Oban High School were forced to concede our Round 1 clash due to insufficient front row players and we were handed a bye in Round 2.
We were drawn away to Hutchesons' Grammar School in the 3rd Round and were coming off a big win over them in the Conference the previous Saturday. The squad knew it was going to be a tough battle but managed to come through a tight encounter 27-20 to book their place in the Quarter Final.
The U16s kicked off Round 1 by hosting Trinity Academy from Edinburgh in Round 1, the boys put in a great performance to win 50-0. Round 2 saw another home draw and a much tougher test with the boys having to really battle to defeat Hutchesons' Grammar 31-19.
Another favourable draw saw the boys at Home again as they hosted Fettes College in Round 3. The boys were outstanding in both attack and defence which laid the platform for an outstanding 68-7 win.
It's a great achievement to have both age groups in the Quarter Finals and we look forward to seeing who we will take on!
