Marr Rugby round up (3.9.2022): Mixed fortunes

Marr Rugby senior results (3.9.2022)
1s: Edinburgh Accies 53 – Marr Rugby 12
2s: Glasgow Accies 25 – Marr Rugby 14
3s: Lenzie 2s 21 – Marr Rugby 46

Marr Rugby’s Saturday started very well as the College sides enjoyed a clean sweep against The Glasgow Academy in the opening round of Conference fixtures. This included the S1s showing real grit and spirit and snatch a win with a last play try to end the match 17 – 19.

The afternoon was disappointing for the 1s and 2s but there was cheer from the result of the 3s opening match in reserve league 2. They hit the ground running and secured a bonus point win.

It was tough going at Raeburn Place as the 1st XV were outplayed by an Accies side that grew in confidence as they pounced on any Marr error and punished these with a score. The end result and performance is certainly one to note and work forward from.

The 2nd XV had a sluggish start and got into an arm wrestle with Glasgow Accies that allowed the home side to create a healthy cushion of points in the first half. An improved performance in the second half saw Marr claw back but the margin was too big. It was a learning curve for the young squad – that included Harris Hillier and Michael Wright making their senior debuts.

Led by captain Jim McNiven, the 3rd XV opened their account with a cracking win away against Lenzie’s 2nd XV. It was the ideal start in this tougher league and one that the squad will take great confidence from and build on. The squad included a senior debut for Declain Holloway (sponsored by Kirsty Dace). Declain is one of 11 young players that this season have graduated from Marr Rugby youth teams into adult rugby.
